3 months off + 3 weeks training = 3:15 marathon. not bad. not bad at all.
little bit of pain for the first 5 miles. worked itself out after that. the shoes were great. wore mizuno precision 9’s, that had a total of 8 miles on them before today. no blisters, no hot spots.
so i had a scheme. 8 minute splits for the first 5, then 7:30s. don’t know what that would have added up to, but it gave me a plan. and did i deviate from it. hit 7:30s for a few miles after the first 5, then i started hitting 7:10s. continued that till about mile 18 or so. then it slowly declined. i’ll list my splits some other time. ended up running exactly 3:15:00. i started at the back of the pack, so i was passing people for the entire race and didn’t get passed at all. and it was a much bigger race than cleveland, so there were always people around.
i was so crazy motivated. every 1/4 mile or so, whenever i’d encounter a group of 10 or more, i’d be all “O-H” and get the “I-O” response. and then i’d be “yeaaaaaaaah”. i must have done that 50 times or more. especially after the half-marathoners peeled off, everyone was so zoned in on themselves and just finishing. it was so depressing! i certainly made it fun for people watching.
and there were lots of bands along the course. i was singing along snippets really loudly. have i ever mentioned i like to sing while i run?
i’m so happy i ran today. it was so much fun. i wasn’t racing it; if i had been, my demeanor would have been way different. i just went out to run 26.2 and enjoy the party.
not bad considering i haven’t done more than 10 miles in a run for about 5 months, and haven’t run more than 30 miles in any of the 3 weeks i’ve been training. as long as i can keep the pain down, i think my dream might be on track. FINGERS CROSSED. i’ve been saying that a lot.
oh yeah, i forgot to mention that today was perfect. it was about 40 degrees at the start, sun wasn’t up yet. but it wasn’t humid or anything so it didn’t feel too cold. i wore a sweatshirt over my singlet, but after about 4 miles i threw it away. kept my gloves on the whole race. sweet time. i didn’t really warm up, i just walked about a half mile in my sandals. didn’t stretch. and the BIGGEST potential faux pas . . . i didn’t put any vaseline on ANYWHERE. but like i said, it wasn’t humid and i was quite careful to keep from getting water on my chest. so my nipples didn’t chafe (thanks to nike’s AWESOME singlet which i looooove). my inner thighs chafed for the first 10 miles, then i stopped noticing. and the backs of my armpits chafed for about that long, and then i stopped noticing them. that was it.
all in all, this cemented my notion that a marathon isn’t hard. call me what you want, but i think that everything is just mental. and i proved it to myself today. 2 runs of 10 miles in my 3 weeks of training. 2 runs of 4 miles. 7-8 runs of 7 miles. 10K race @ 6:30 splits. didn’t physically prepare me for a marathon, much less a 3:15 mara. yes, maybe there’s something physically special about me. but not THAT special. it was all in the knowledge that the 26.2 were going to pass. that lack of knowledge was what kinda broke me in cleveland.
today rocked so much . . . i’m actually thinking of hitting boston ‘09. maybe i’m aim for that to be my first sub-2:40.
